Miss DC takes the Miss USA crown – again

CouncilMag.com

On Mother’s Day, Miss DC Kára McCullough was crowned Miss USA 2017, marking the first time there were back-to-back wins for a Miss DC. McCullough, a 25-year-old scientist at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, received the crown from Deshauna Barber, Miss USA 2016 and the previous Miss DC titleholder. McCullough faced some backlash for comments about health care during the competition. In the early days of her reign, she sought to clarify her statements. “I am privileged to have health care,” she said on “Good Morning America.” She continued, “And I do believe that it should be a right.” Already active in the community with her Science Exploration for Kids program, McCullough said she plans to focus on STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – enrichment for children during her yearlong reign.

I don’t know if it’s in the water or just the area, but the opportunity and just the women coming out of (D.C.) are amazing.

“There were so many naysayers, saying ‘you won’t win, they wouldn’t have two in a row,’ but we’re here to challenge the status quo. D.C. might be the new pageant mecca!”
