Hazel brings global cuisine to shaw

By Nicole L. Gill

Hazel, with its shareable menu, is one of the newest restaurants to join the landscape of the Shaw neighborhood. Chef Rob Rubba and his partners “were immediately drawn to the energy of the neighborhood,” he said. For Rubba – an alum of Tallula and Azur in D.C. – Hazel features a global cuisine with flavors from France, Japan, Korea and China. “My cooking includes flavors from the cultures and cuisines that I love and have shaped me,” he said. One such dish is duck. The menu includes a duck dinner ($50 per person) prepared in various ways. Diners to Hazel, which opened June 27, are enjoying the sticky crunch ribs and the English muffins with whipped ‘Nduja, Rubba said.

“Duck is the inspiration for why I’m a chef and this dish has been the baseline throughout my entire career.”
